Overview

The South Carolina College of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. See the college Web site (www.sccp.sc.edu) for a full disclosure of the college accreditation status. The college offers a program leading to the M.S. degree in pharmaceutical sciences.

The South Carolina College of Pharmacy offers a Ph.D. degree in pharmaceutical sciences that is jointly administered by USC and MUSC. At the University of South Carolina, areas of research specialization include medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, pharmacology, and pharmaceutical outcomes sciences. At the Medical University of South Carolina, areas of research specialization include natural products/pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutics, and industrial pharmaceutical technology. Specialized course offerings are available by distance education using faculty from both campuses

The South Carolina College of Pharmacy is composed of the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences and the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Outcome Sciences. The Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences offers advanced degrees with specialization in the areas of medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, and pharmacology. The Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Outcome Sciences offers advanced degrees with specialization in the area of pharmaceutical outcomes sciences.

A graduate admissions committee of the college reviews all applicants to the M.S. and Ph.D. programs. Candidates may apply for admission at any time during the year; however, notification of acceptance will normally be made only in March for matriculation the following fall semester. Serious consideration will be given to applicants with a minimum overall grade point average equivalent of B and minimum GRE scores of 1050 (verbal and quantitative sections) and 4 (analytical section). Applicants whose native language is not English are also required to submit a satisfactory score on the TOEFL. The minimum acceptable score on the TOEFL is 88 (internet-based). A degree from an accredited college of pharmacy is required for applicants considering an advanced degree in the discipline of clinical pharmacy and outcome sciences. For advanced degrees in the disciplines of medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, or pharmacology, an undergraduate degree in pharmacy or in the supporting sciences, such as chemistry or biology, is recommended. The college awards a number of teaching and/or research assistantships to graduate students in pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences and clinical pharmacy and outcome sciences. The award is based upon academic promise and has a highly competitive annual stipend. Recipients also receive a reduction in University fees and tuition. Students receiving graduate stipends are subject to regulations of The Graduate School and the following policies:

1.     Supported students must enroll for at least 6 semester hours of credit each semester and at least 1 semester hour each summer term.

2.     Assistantships shall be canceled for students who do not perform their assigned duties satisfactorily.

3.     Assistantships shall be canceled for students who do not demonstrate quality performance in their academic program. To receive a graduate stipend students must also meet The Graduate School criteria for progression.

4.     Students generally will not be supported for more than one year beyond the semester they are eligible to stand for the Ph.D. comprehensive examination or for four years, whichever is less.
